Think of D8 and THC like cousins. As both D8 and Delta-9 THC contain THC as their active compound, they’re both psychotropic.

Where does Delta-8 THC come from?

To make D8 commercially available, producers needed to think outside the box. They could opt to synthetically produce D8 in a lab – not so cool -, or since D8 is naturally occurring, they could look to other cannabinoids for some help (science!).

Now, you might be asking yourself how this is possible, especially when you realize that D8 is psychotropic and Industrial Hemp can only contain 0.3% or less THC.

D8 THC is converted from Hemp CBD Isolate using a process called ‘isomerization’ (eye-zom-er-eye-zation – just in case someone asks). Isomerization is a process where one compound is transformed into another, while retaining a similar chemical structure (remember that D8 is an isomer of THC). 

This is where the fun starts. Remember how we said D8 and THC were cousins? This is how: 

To make D8, CBD isolate undergoes a process called isomerization. The CBD isolate is processed with a food grade acid (industry term to remember: process aid) that converts it into Delta-9 THC. Once a sufficient quantity of THC is achieved, it is further refined to produce pure and potent D8 distillate.  

Sound scary? It shouldn’t. 

If you’ve used any distillate-based products, whether it’s in vape carts, edibles, oils, you’re already familiar with extracted cannabis products. As for isomerization… if you’ve tried CBN – the other fancy minor cannabinoid – you’re already familiar with isomerization, since CBN can also be derived from hemp CBD Isolate through a similar process. 

And you know that in Canada, cannabis is subject to strict regulation. 

The Health Canada and Good Production Practices (GPP) guidelines that govern cannabis production limit the types of solvents that can be used in extracting cannabinoids, as well as govern the tolerance limits for residual solvents after the fact. Creating Delta-8 THC in Canada is similarly subjected to the same regulations. Companies must adhere to the guidelines set out in the regulations. 

What’s Delta-8 THC like? 

Whether it’s Delta-8 or Delta-9, THC has psychoactive properties. Delta-8 THC is no different. 

While Delta-8 usage is significantly less documented than Delta-9 THC, you can count on Delta-8 THC to hit different. And why not, it’s a different cannabinoid. 

It has been reported that the effects of D8 are “lighter”, which can be attributed to its slightly weaker attachment to the CB1 receptor compared to Delta-9 THC. But don’t be fooled.
